Protecting yourself from Online Credit Card frauds – Part 2

In this post, we continue to discuss tips to help protect you from Online Credit Card frauds. If you haven’t already, we recommend reading the previous post containing five other tips you should take note of. Also, stay tuned to SupportMart Scam Awareness and Fraud Awareness blogs for the latest updates in online scams and frauds and other posts related to our services.

1. Ensure the website uses VBV or MasterCard SecureCode

Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode are measures employed by Visa and MasterCard to authenticate the payer’s identity. You will be asked to enter a unique PIN or password of some kind that proves it’s you who’s performing the transaction. Since your card wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) contain this piece of data, fraudsters will not be able to use it on sites that support VBV or SecureCode.

2. Enable mobile/e-mail notifications for large transactions

Most banks give customers the option to enable mobile/e-mail notifications to alert them of large transactions, as soon as they happen. You should opt in for this feature.

3. Do not sign up for ‘FREE’ offers requiring card details

Many ‘FREE’ offers entice you to try certain products or services free or your money back, avoid these. Some websites might charge you nada but still require you to provide your card details for a bill of 0$ (to show it’s free) or for future transactions. Do NOT give away your details to such sites: ATTENTION Torrent users! SupportMart can help you spot such patterns of online scam. Talk to us!

4. Do not store/share your card details online

This includes storing as e-mail draft messages, documents on cloud sharing based accounts or sharing on IM or e-mail; a hacked account could compromise this data.

However, the Internet is not the only means to perpetrate a credit card fraud. It is pretty straightforward for someone to copy your card details even without stealing your card, and you wouldn’t even know. For instance, you may use a credit card to make payments in a restaurant. The waiter disappears with the card and comes back a short while later with the proof of transaction. Who is to say he hasn’t conveniently copied your card details in the meantime? And if he doesn’t use the data immediately but saves it for later, you wouldn’t be able to trace a fraudulent transaction back to him.

You might have also heard of how fraudsters tinker with ATMs to read your card data when you use it in an ATM booth. Several banks have issued advisories notifying users of such ploys.

Many other instances present sufficient risk for you to exercise great caution in using cards. Remember to keep an eye on your card wherever you use it and avoid carrying it around unless you need it. Before you take any service, online or otherwise, do your research: SupportMart advises you to read up reviews to make sure it’s genuine.
